Steve Mattheis
I am a professional nature photographer, specializing in photographing the amazing diversity of wildlife and landscapes of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. I am a Jackson Hole native, having lived in the valley for over 40 years. Every day I go out, I strive to make compelling images, enjoy myself, appreciate the beauty that surrounds me, and behave respectfully in the field.
I haven’t always been a photographer. In anticipation of the birth of my first child, I became interested in learning to use a camera to be able to make nice images of the baby. As I learned to use the camera and started trying to see things as a photographer, I began reconnecting with the beauty that I was surrounded by living in Jackson Hole. With a new vision, I enjoy now more than ever, the magical place that is my home (and that I had taken for granted for so many years of my life).
I was awarded the Grand Prize in the 2018 Audubon Photography Awards, and also I won the Audubon 2017 Professional Division. I have had winning images recognized in several other contests including Birds As Art and Wyoming Wildlife Magazine. My photography has been published in Digital Foto Magazine, Wyoming Wildlife Magazine, Audubon Magazine, Nature’s Best Photography Magazine, 5280 magazine, Delta Sky Magazine, Explore Yellowstone, and numerous newspapers around the United States.
